The Household Hazardous Waste Recycling Center (HHWRC) closed for the season…what to do with things now?
2019 Season Data
First, we wish to thank you all for your continued interest in keeping hazardous chemicals out of our waterways, soil, landfills, and air. Second, with the close of the HHWRC's 24th season, we would like to share with you some data about the 2019 season.
Over the entire season, the HHWRC serviced 4,505 Summit County households. From these households, 245,357 pounds were collected. On average there were 282 cars per day. One thing we would like to make sure people are aware of, is how significant arrival times are.
Looking at the data collected at the HHWRC, the first hour of operation, on average has 84.25 cars arriving and serviced. The second hour's average goes down to 68 cars per hour. During the last hour, throughout the season the average was 31 cars per hour. 11% of the visits to the HHWRC come between 6 and 7 pm. We highly suggest that if your schedule permits, it is better to come later in the day.
Latex Paint
Many people have latex paint. Our HHWRC does not accept latex paint. One main reason it does not is that if your paint is dried out, the paint (along with the can) be placed into your regular trash.

Visit the HHW page to find our paint calculator tool. If you will be starting a new painting project, before you go out and buy paint, try out the calculator and determine how much you need. Reduction is always a better option than trying to find a way to deal with something after you have too much of it!
Batteries
Batteries are another material that people seem to have in abundance! (Or at least it feels that way.) Batteries Plus Bulbs stores will accept batteries for recycling, but there can be a fee. You can also try checking out the Call2Recycle website for locations that will recycle batteries.
Be sure to verify what types of batteries are accepted through each service. Additionally, many auto parts stores accept lead-acid (i.e. car) batteries as well.
If you can wait until early summer/late spring of 2020, Our Household Hazardous Recycling Center accepts batteries from Summit County residents that they generated in their home.
Used Motor Oil
Waste oil that comes from changing a car or truck oil is another material that the HHWRC accepts during the year. During our off-season you can look to these options:

Used Cooking Oil
Cooking oil is another material that needs to be handled properly as well. As most people are aware, placing cooking oil down your drain at home can lead to problems. It can not only clog your drains, but it can cause problems with water treatment. Other Materials
We suggest that people wait until our Household Hazardous Waste Recycling Center reopens for other materials such as:
- Fire extinguishers
- Oil-based paints
- Old gasoline (mixed and unmixed)
- Rust removers
- Solvents
- Stains, etc.
As long as you are a Summit County resident and the material was generated in your home, you can utilize this ReWorks funded service.
Scrap Tires
All but one type of item/material is accepted without a fee. Tires are the only item that we do charge for and its price is $1 a tire (cash only). There is a limit of 10 tires per vehicle.
Though if you do not wish to wait for our center to reopen to get rid of your tires, you can call Lightner Tire at 330-724-7436 for their hours and pricing.
