Yard Waste
Backyard Composting
Yard waste materials such as grass clippings, leaves, and yard trimmings make up an increasingly large percentage of our municipal waste stream. Instead of throwing them in your garbage, a better option is to compost.
Get started with our Backyard Composting Guide (PDF).
Leave the Leaves
An alternative to composting is to mulch. For tips and information, visit the Summit Soil and Water Conservation District's page on mulching (the "Leave the Leaves" section is about half-way down the page).
Municipal Yard Waste Programs
Some Summit County communities provide curbside collection of yard waste (brush, tree limbs, etc.) and leaves. Other communities provide opportunities to drop-off yard waste.
Always confirm schedules and locations, as well as a list of accepted items, with your specific community.
Ohio Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Registered Compost Facilities
The Ohio EPA maintains a list of registered compost facilities that accept yard waste. Each facility has its own hours, fees, directions, and instructions for drop-off. Please contact a facility before bringing material to them.
